Daphne & David Sheldrick’s Elephant & Rhino Orphanage Tour

Poa Sana Safaris / Daphne & David Sheldrick’s Elephant & Rhino Orphanage Tour

Daphne & David Sheldrick’s Elephant & Rhino Orphanage Tour

per person

Dame Sheldrick located inside the Nairobi National Park has been raising elephant orphans since the 1950’s when she lived and worked in Tsavo National Park. She established an elephant and rhino nursery inside Nairobi’s National Park in the late 1970’s, as part of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Dame Daphne established the Trust in honour of her late husband David, the founding warden of the Tsavo National Parks, and a pioneer conservationist in Kenya. The orphanage is located inside the Nairobi National Park.

Daphne Sheldrick’s Elephant Orphanage looks after and supports orphaned baby elephants and rhinos that have lost their mothers to poaching especially in and around Tsavo National Park, death, injuries, on getting lost in the wild or other tragedies. Besides feeding, washing and walking the babies, Daphne and her dedicated staff of keepers provide emotional support to the orphans as they raise them to be released back into the wild when they are ready.
It is worth a visit to the park to see the young elephants interacting with their keepers – playing, taking mud baths and being fed with milk. This is a rare sight to watch and a most memorable way to get up close to the babies and observe their playful habits, something which is not possible or even safe during your safari in the wild.

You can visit the orphanage at 11 am and at 5 pm every day, for an hour after the babies have been fed and given a mud bath. You adopt an orphaned elephant or Rhino at ($50).
